Kevin Hart shares wisdom on how to overcome rejection
Kevin Hart’s new book is dropping knowledge.
Colbert introduced Hart as a “one-man entertainment industry.” But the stand-up comedian, actor, and now author, may have never wound up on that late night couch had he listened to his critics while climbing the ranks of comedy.
After facing a gut-punch of rejection from an esteemed club owner, Kevin was feeling pretty down about his dreams.
“It took a friend of mine telling me, ‘Why do you care about somebody else’s opinion? He told me, ‘You’re in charge of your own destiny,'” Kevin explained to Colbert. “…You’re in competition with yourself. The day that you give up on you is the day you give up on your dream.”
The advice stuck and helped Kevin build the thick skin it takes to make it in Hollywood.
“When I heard no a thousand times, it rolled off my back.”
Kevin told Stephen he hopes his life lessons will inspire the next generation of comedians trying to make it. I Can’t Make This Up: Life Lessons is available now.
